No one’s better at photographing fashion right now than Hedi Slimane.  I was reminded of the quality of his work after seeing the cover shot on the September/October issue of American Photo.  Yeah, I hear ya.  You say it’s more about a half nake woman than the clothes.  But photos of fashion aren’t really about the clothes, now, are they?

I wasn’t jazzed by his installation, Young American, at FOAM when I saw it in Amsterdam last summer.  His pictures were strong enough that they didn’t need the flags, the music and the other etc etc.  You can see his fashion and personal work on his website http://www.hedislimane.com

This is one from a batch of 120/220 that I picked up today.

Headed downtown to pick up some film and made a quick jaunt through Chelsea galleries…

The highlights:

Xu Zhen recreates the Shanghart Supermarket from Art Basel Miami at James Cohan Gallery.   He created a supermarket of empty packages priced as they would be in Shanghai in yen but you can buy everything in the store for 1 yen to 1 USD conversion.

I picked up a can of Suntory Original Special Beer for $2.50 and my gift-with-purchase was the reciept and a plastic bag.  This piece isn’t as overtly funny as his Damien Hirst-piss taking bisected Dinosaurs but it’s the best thing I saw all day.  And, the best art purchase of the week!!

The lowlights?  David LaChappelle at Tony Shafrazi.  Here’s the formula:  (Jeff Wall + saturation)/ Oliver Stone * point of purchase displays = great idea poorly executed.
